Chapter I.
태민
Admire the artist, not the music
I will preface this and say I usually greatly dislike mid-late 3rd gen. and on Kpop compositions because they are synthetically grating on the ears (hypocritical, I am aware). Vocals or performance always take the forefront when I appreciate an artist of this genre.
That being said, as much as I find the songs unpleasant, I have always admired 태민 for his vocals and dance.
Chapter II.
Colde와OffOnOff
Interested in revisiting
Love 김희수의voice.
딘
Interested in revisiting
Have always admired his voice.
DPR (Live)
Occasionally revisit
I am unsure how, but DPR during 다빈의era impacted how I approach music and time-based media.
Chapter III.
Day6
No longer interested
I am still touched by the classmate who went to the band's concert years ago and brought back merch for me. Thank you.
원필 was my favourite vocalist in the band and I wanted to be like 영현, specifically because of "아 왜," Lmao.
Onewe
Occasionally revisit
Eccentric band I fixated on for a while. Their ballads are quite sweet, backdropped by a lovely universal theme. 용훈과동명의 voices were soothing, and Iirc the band itself was my favourite of the Korean ones. I would still listen to them for their ballads.
The Rose
Rarely revisit
Good ol' soft rock. They had more influence on me than Day6, yet I can't understand in what way.
Childhood.
- Early Linkin Park, early Patd, George Michael, Ghost, Gorillaz, Korn, Rhcp, Slipknot, The Oral Cigarettes
- Honourable mentions: Crown the Empire, Muse, One Ok Rock, Sum 41, The Neighbourhood
Notes.
Chapter I.
Linkin Park
Rarely revisit older songs
The first band that was 'mine' exclusively, courtesy of pre-installed music on my ...first Mp3 player. Accordingly, it was the ...first time I went all out soaking in a discography.
Ngl, even if I haven't listened to them for so long, this band has had a huge influence on my musical taste and perhaps who I am.
Panic at the Disco
Occasionally revisit older songs
One of my first bands, introduced by a certain game... It was both fascinating and disastrous to watch them explode into the mainstream.
George Michael
Rarely revisit
One of my first musical artists ever (who I am still able to recall). I was drawn to his voice when I was a wee child.
Ghost
Occasionally revisit
Always loved theatrics in music and performance. Remember fearing a religious relative would curse me to Hell for enjoying them though.
Gorillaz
Rarely revisit
I like me a dose of Damon Albarn's voice. And the eclecticism.
Korn
Might revisit to learn the songs
That raunchy, throaty, bouncin', slappin' bass sent me down a path from which I can never return.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Semi-interested in revisiting
During secondary school I got into them thanks to an internet friend. Listened from then on often and throughout early high school.
It's a friggin' iconic band, that funky Flea and John. I really appreciate the instruments; however, I have a hard time with Anthony's vocals.
Slipknot
Occasionally revisit older songs
My whole bloody secondary education and a lil after. Ye, I grew up in a nu-metal era. Now, I know metal 'purists' will shit on nu-metal, but I found/find the music and its groove damn good fun.
Love screaming when it is appropriately directed. The band left an indelible mark on my musical taste.
The Oral Cigarettes
Might revisit to learn the songs
The earlier part of my high school experience. I suppose musically they really appealed to me with their organised chaos
Honourable Mentions.
Crown the Empire
No longer interested
I adored their music in secondary school, especially for the theatrics. I stand by saying, if I hadn't turned out screwed up, I probably would've gone into theatre.
Truthfully, I don't think they were the best... but they created a world with their music and it helped me back then, somehow.
Muse
Rarely revisit
Listened extensively in early high school. Suppose I dug the uneasy, extraterrestrial concepts.
One Ok Rock
Occasionally revisit older songs
I would guess their music comforted me in secondary/high school. Maybe I was just relieved there was positive Asian representation.
Around the time it came out, "Broken Heart of Gold" helped me pull through a dark period. I hadn't expected to listen to them again.
Sum 41
No longer interested
Had a huge pop-punk and emo stint in secondary school. The pop-punk phase culminated with a fixation on this band.
Apart from "Pieces" and maybe "With Me," I can't say I could ever see myself listening to their music again. I combed through Sum 41's discography back then, so I will note them here for obligatory honour, not recommendation.
The Neighbourhood
Rarely revisit
Nonstop listening in high school. For lack of better description, the musical atmosphere, my disposition certainly embodied it at the time.
